[Reading Explorer – G7–8] Saving the Rhinos

🎯 Goal

Understand why traditional efforts to protect African rhinos have failed and how relocating them to Australia might offer a better chance at survival.

🦏 Reading Passage

Saving the Rhinos

Poachers in Africa are killing many rhinos to get their horns. These horns are highly valuable in some traditional medicines in Vietnam and China, selling for up to thirty-six thousand dollars per pound. To stop the poaching, officials have tried several methods: they built fenced areas for the rhinos, increased patrols in their habitats, and even removed the animals’ horns.

However, these efforts have not been very effective. The number of rhinos in Africa keeps falling. As a creative solution, some experts have suggested moving rhinos out of Africa completely. Ray Dearlove, who started the Australian Rhino Project, came up with a new idea: relocate eighty rhinos to a safari park near Adelaide, Australia, where they can live safely and reproduce in a protected environment.
