π Extended Reading Passage
Fungi vs Plants
Plants and fungi are both living things, but they are very different.
Plants are green and need sunlight to make their own food.
They use a process called photosynthesis.
With sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide, they make sugar to grow.
Fungi, like mushrooms and mold, cannot make their own food.
They do not have leaves or stems.
Instead, they absorb food from other things.
Some fungi grow on old bread, trees, or even on walls in wet bathrooms!
Plants grow in soil.
They have roots to hold them in place and take in water.
They also have leaves and stems.
Fungi grow in damp places and spread through tiny cells called spores.
Spores help fungi reproduceβmake more of themselves.
Another big difference:
Plants need sunlight to live.
Fungi do not need sunlight.
In fact, many fungi grow best in the dark!
So next time you see something green in the garden, ask yourself:
βIs it a plant or a fungus?β
